Before we start talking about tattoo care, let’s talk about the moment right after getting tattooed.
It’s important to note that once completed, the tattoo artist will apply a protective transparent film over the tattooed area.
This film can be a common plastic, which must be removed and changed every 4 hours for 24 hours. A gentle wash with warm water and neutral soap should be followed by patting dry with a clean paper towel.
An alternative is a special film called second skin, which is left on the skin between 24 and 48 hours to protect the tattoo while it begins to heal. Once the initial protectors are removed, proceed with the following steps:
1. Keep the area clean: Gently wash the tattoo with warm water and a neutral soap, without fragrances or alcohol. Do it with clean hands, avoiding rubbing.
2. Carefully dry: After washing, dry the tattoo by gently tapping with a paper towel or absorbent paper. Avoid rubbing to prevent skin irritation.
3. Constant hydration: Apply a specific moisturizing cream for tattoos or one recommended by professionals, with a thin layer to prevent the skin from drying out.
4. Avoid sun exposure: The tattooed skin should not be exposed directly to the sun during the healing process, as this can affect the pigment and damage the skin.
5. Do not scratch or remove scabs: It is normal for scabs or flaking to appear; do not remove or scratch them to avoid scars and color loss.
6. Comfortable and clean clothes: Wear loose clothing that does not rub the tattooed area and keep the area as clean as possible to avoid infections.
Once the first two weeks have passed and the tattoo has visibly started to heal, you can follow these tips to keep it in good condition:
● Continue to hydrate the skin regularly to keep the tattoo vibrant and the skin healthy.
● Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen if inevitable.
● Do not use abrasive products or exfoliants directly on the tattoo.
● Maintain proper hygiene to avoid irritations or infections.
